75 Hard rules

75 Hard is a 75-day mental toughness program created by Andy Frisella, and the program is emphatic that it is not a fitness challenge. Every day: two 45-minute workouts with one outdoors, a gallon of water, ten pages of non-fiction, a progress photo, and a diet with no alcohol and no cheat meals.

The five daily rules

Andy Frisella published 75 Hard in 2019 and is emphatic about what it is. The program's own page states, in capitals, that this is not a fitness challenge — it calls itself a transformative mental toughness program. Reading the rules with that framing in mind explains most of the design decisions that otherwise look arbitrary.

Daily ruleThe detail that catches people
Two 45-minute workoutsThey must be separate sessions with a gap between them — not one 90-minute block. At least one must be outdoors, in whatever weather arrives.
Follow a dietYou pick any structured diet; the program does not prescribe one. No cheat meals and no alcohol, for all 75 days.
1 gallon of waterA US gallon, about 3.8 litres.
Read 10 pagesNon-fiction or personal development, read rather than listened to. Audiobooks do not count.
Take a progress photoEvery day, all 75 days. No requirement to post it anywhere.

The rule the whole thing turns on

Miss any task, on any day, and you start over at day one. There is no partial credit, no doubling up tomorrow, no negotiating with yourself about whether a 40-minute session was close enough.

This is the rule people argue about, and it is also the only rule that makes the program what it claims to be. If the point were fitness, restarting on day 62 over a forgotten photo would be absurd — you would simply take two photos on day 63. The point is that the line does not move, which is precisely what makes it uncomfortable.

Worth knowing before day one. Two 45-minute workouts, a gallon of water, ten pages and a photo is around two hours a day, every day, for two and a half months — including the day you fly, the day you are hungover from a wedding you did not attend because alcohol is banned, and the day you are ill. The failure rate is not a mystery. It is arithmetic.

Is it free?

The rules are public and cost nothing to follow. Frisella sells books and an app around the program, but no purchase is required — a notebook and a water bottle will do.

The parts that need a real caution

Most coverage of 75 Hard treats the difficulty as purely motivational. Some of it is not:

None of this makes the program bad. It makes it a program that some people should modify — and modifying it means you are doing something else, which is entirely allowed as long as you are honest that it is no longer 75 Hard.

If you want the structure without the restart clause

The restart rule is the part that ends most attempts, and it is separable from the rest. Keeping every other rule but replacing “start over” with “log the miss and carry on” is close to what 75 Medium already is. Dropping to one workout a day and allowing social drinking is 75 Soft. Both are complete challenges rather than a failure to do this one.

Questions people actually ask

What happens if you miss a task on 75 Hard?

You start over at day one. This is the defining rule of the program — there is no partial credit and no making it up the next day.

Is 75 Hard free?

The rules are public and free to follow. Andy Frisella sells related books and apps, but nothing is required to do the program.

Do the two workouts have to be separate?

Yes. Two 45-minute sessions, and the program requires a gap between them rather than a single 90-minute block. At least one must be outdoors, whatever the weather.

Can you choose any diet?

You choose a structured diet and follow it exactly. The program does not prescribe one — it prescribes that you pick one and do not deviate, with no cheat meals and no alcohol.

Is 75 Hard safe?

It is demanding, and it was not designed around individual health conditions. Two daily workouts with no rest days raises injury and overtraining risk, and a fixed gallon of water is not right for everyone. Talk to a doctor first, especially with a heart or kidney condition, during pregnancy, or with any history of disordered eating.
